Vanessa, 27, and her husband are raising their four children in the impoverished Tondo region of Manila, where there are few or no services, utilities, or sanitation.

PTM0721largeShe has difficulty supporting the family with the equivalent of $5-$7.50 CAD they bring in daily from collecting reusable materials from garbage. They are grateful for their son Saia's Chalice sponsor.

In April 2020, when Vanessa was four months pregnant, she developed rashes and legions all over her body. In March 2021, she underwent a biopsy, and her doctor diagnosed her with lupus, an autoimmune disease in which the body attacks its own soft tissues. The rashes and legions are a common development for lupus patients, known as acute cutaneous (skin) lupus. Vanessa is weak and her joints swell painfully. She cannot carry her baby daughter, Kylie. There are times when she also has difficulty breathing.

Vanessa's doctor requires further blood testing to determine the best course of treatment. The cost will be $185.14 CAD, which is far outside Vanessa's humble budget. Once her doctors determine the correct treatment, the Tondo sponsor site will accompany her through it.
