Project Location: Amanecer, Bolivia
Project Type: Health
Project Code: BAA0121
Background: At just 18, Fernando has undergone significant challenges in his young life including physical and psychological mistreatment.
He and his siblings did not have a consistent loving parental figure, entering the workforce when they should have been in school. Fernando left his hometown of Santa Cruz, Bolivia, to come to Cochabamba in search of a safe home with relatives. Unsuccessful, he was welcomed into the San Martin San Vincent Home, which is run by our partners in the Amanecer site, and entered the sponsorship program.
In 2018, Fernando had been living in the home and attending classes for about a year when he got seeds in his eyes after horsing around with his friends. The resulting eye injury was later diagnosed as Total Neurosensory Retinal Detachment in his left eye. He underwent surgery which saved his vision, but he is now at risk of losing vision in his left eye again.
His specialists determined that he needs a vitrectomy, lensectomy and intra-ocular lens implant immediately to prevent total vision loss.
Because he is 18 years old, Fernando can no longer live at the Amanecer home, and must support himself financially. It is a delicate time in his life already - a time to find his way as a young adult, continue his studies, find work, and build on the skills he learned at the home. He does not have family in Cochabamba to support him nor a Chalice sponsor. The site staff in Amanecer believe that it is critical that he receive the surgery.Amanecer site has requested $1,897.10 for the surgical intervention Fernando needs to ensure that he retains clear vision in his left eye and can continue to support himself in the future.
Funding Request: $1,897.10
