Stanislav, who is locally known as Stanco, is a field worker from our Arica sponsor site in Chile.
He was born with severe myopia (nearsightedness) and by the age of nine, he couldn't read what was written on the blackboard, even from the front row of the classroom. Over the years, his eyesight has further diminished.
At age 29, he enrolled in a health progam to have intraocular lenses. After a two year wait he had the surgery. This surgery gave him more independence and improved his quality of life. It has been 27 years since that operation and he has now been diagnosed with cataracts in both eyes and requires two new intraocular lenses.
His public health insurance will only cover half of the cost of the operation, and nothing towards the two new intraocular lenses or the removal of the old ones. He earns a minimum salary and is the only provider for a family of four. He has been saving to have the surgery; however, he is still a long way from reaching his goal.
Due to his progressive condition, his doctor has advised that he is in urgent need of the surgery to save his limited eyesight. The total amount required for him to have the surgery is $4,939.02 minus his savings of $934.23, leaving a balance of $4,004.78. Chalice's Arica sponsor site has requested financial assistance for him to have the surgery.
