Blessings comes from a rural village about 350 Km from St. Mary’s School for the Visually Impaired in northern Zambia. He lives with his parents who are subsistence farmers.

Blessings’ cancer treatment, Kawambwa, Zambia

Born with albinism, Blessings has grown up with the added vulnerability of living with a rare genetic condition that makes him stand out in his community. Despite this, he has shown remarkable courage and determination. Blessings has always dreamed of becoming a teacher, driven by a passion for learning and a desire to inspire others.

Blessings arrived at the boarding school this semester and classes started normally. After three weeks in school, he started having a small wound on the side of the right eye. These wounds are common among people with albinism, as the sun burns their skin. They usually go away with consistent cleaning and prevention of direct sunlight exposure.

However, Blessings’ wound persisted and started growing for over three weeks. The local doctor ran tests and referred him to the hospital. At the hospital, the doctors told Blessings that he would need to go to the cancer centre in the capital city of Lusaka.

This trip is nearly 1000 kilometres. Once there, Blessings’ diagnostic process and treatment is also going to be costly. Combined, the Kawambwa sponsor site’s budget comes to $2,835.80 CAD.

This is far more than his family can manage. Their small farm only produces enough to feed the family of six. It would take more than four years of all their income to afford Blessings’ treatment and travel.

The Kawambwa site has therefore requested to cover this urgent need. With your support, Blessings will be taken to the cancer clinic in Lusaka for diagnosis and treatment.
