Norma and Hugo are a mother and son duo who moved into the region where our Pukavy sponsor site works.

PPV0922largeThey came to Itauguá City to continue treatment for a congenital skin condition they share, called ichthyosis. The condition encompasses multiple issues, including dry, itchy skin that appears scaly, rough, and red.

Even though Norma has had the condition her whole life, she could only access treatment starting in her twenties. Now 37, her skin is in much worse condition than Hugo's, who has had access to special ointments since birth. However, the eight-year-old has health and dental issues on top of the skin conditions.

They both also face stigma and social isolation because of their conditions. Norma struggles to find employers, and she is limited in her work because she must stay out of the sun. Norma's brother has come to stay with them and support the family as best he can, but he cannot provide for all their needs by himself. Their housing, though safe, is basic and is not a suitable environment for their skin.

Both Norma and Hugo continue their treatment at the national hospital but are unable to afford their medication or the nutritious diet they need to make real, lasting improvement. The disease cannot be cured, but with proper treatment, both mother and son can lead a more dignified and comfortable life.

Hugo has a Chalice sponsor through the Pukavy (formerly Dominica) sponsor site. Knowing the immense challenges the family face, the site staff have requested support for their treatment, as well as urgent dental attention for Hugo.

The total budget for the treatment assistance is $934.88 CAD. This covers their lotions, bathing supplies, sunscreen, prescription medication, and Hugo's odonatological treatment.
