Teenaged Mhya lives with her mother and three siblings near our Ayolas sponsor site in Paraguay. She has been having trouble with her eyesight and needs surgical intervention. Mhya’s teacher noticed that her student was struggling to read and copy notes from the blackboard, and that her grades were dropping.
The teacher contacted Mhya’s mother, who got her in to consult a doctor. Her doctor diagnosed cataracts; a result of a chronic illness Mhya already manages.
To prevent her eyesight from worsening, Mhya needs cataract surgery and intraocular lenses. As a precaution, doctors perform this surgery one eye at a time, so they will attend to her right eye first.
Mhya’s mother works for minimum wage and is unable to afford the medical fees, which amount to $899.05 CAD. This is the cost of the lenses and other biomaterials needed to perform the cataract surgery, which is not covered by health insurance. The Ayolas sponsor site staff have therefore put forward a request for the full amount on her behalf.
