Project Type: Education
Background: Chalice has been partnering with the "World of Children" charity in the Ivano-Frankivsk and Volyn regions since 1999. Sponsored children live with their families in both urban and rural areas.
Prior to the pandemic, many parents entrusted their children to live with relatives while they sought work outside of the country. But international border closures have eliminated that option. Even before the COVID-19 shutdown with its crippling economic impact, parents in Ukraine were already facing the challenges of ballooning costs of necessities such as food and heating.
Across all three sub-sites of the Pochaiv area, Chalice site workers have identified 600 students in six communities whose families cannot afford adequate school supplies. Without assistance, these children would return to classes in the fall lacking the basic supplies to learn effectively in class or do homework. Children in this situation are vulnerable to falling behind in their classes and being discouraged from pursuing their education.
The Pochaiv site seeks to purchase and distribute packages of essential school supplies to 600 of the neediest sponsored children. The packages will include items such as notebooks, paper, drawing pads, coloured pencils, geometry sets, pens, markers, and a school bag. Nine hundred of their family members will also benefit from this gift, as it will allow them to apply their limited funds to other essential needs.
