Project Location: Mombasa site, Kenya
Project Code: HDP KMK0921

The site staff have created a program to increase the level of literacy in Kikambala, with an aim to reducing poverty and empowering elder adults to be leaders in their community.

Chalice has worked in Mombasa since 2001, partnering with the Sisters of St. Joseph. The site is situated on the outskirts of this coastal city, where the city’s poorest families live. The site focuses on orphans, vulnerable children, widows, single parent families, and those infected or affected by HIV/ AIDS. The parents and guardians of sponsored children receive micro-finance and financial literacy training, as well as sessions on good hygiene practices, sanitation, nutrition, and parenting.

The Mombasa site works in a community called Kikambala, which has a relatively high proportion of elderly men and women. These elders were kept from accessing basic education, and they are in turn unable to teach their children literacy skills. As a result, there are generations of low-literacy adults in their community.

The site staff have created a program to increase the level of literacy in Kikambala, with an aim to reducing poverty and empowering elder adults to be leaders in their community. This program will also support parents to take a role in their children’s literacy education.

In this cohort, 35 adults will enroll for basic education and life-skills courses. The site will hire eight teachers to cover the curriculum, which includes reading and writing in both English and Kiswahili, mathematics, financial literacy, and basic computer skills.

The total budget for this two-year program is $49,857.53 CAD, which includes teachers’ salaries for 24 months, a one-time exam fee, meals during exam time, graduation gowns and learning materials for 35 students.

This program will empower 35 adults, including 25 Chalice-sponsored elders, to gain the resources to read, write, solve problems, and assist the next generations to do the same. Many learners will have the skills to access jobs that they could not do before. The Mombasa site also foresees that more informed elders will lead to an overall improvement of Kikambala’s living standards.
